So long, Fish

Cross-posted from, sorry if you already read this….

Fish the cat, originally uploaded by Bob Goyetche.

One of the first things I remember about my wife Cat is that when we met years ago, she told me she had a cat named “Fish”. I found that to be a great name for a cat, and it always seemed no other named would have worked for him. Although I wouldn’t describe myself as a “cat person”, he grew on me, and he became a big part of the family Cathy and I put together.

If you are/were a CatFish Show listener, this is the “Fish” part of the show title – Possibly Canada’s first podcasting cat, and almost certainly the first one to have a podcast named after him.

Recently, he just didn’t seem like himself and seemed to be slowing down. Some blood work confirmed that he had severe diabetes, and perhaps it could be controlled, but it would involve multiple injections per day.

Being Cathy’s buddy, the heavy decision came to her. Of course, the natural reaction is to want to do everything to keep our friends around longer. In the end, she chose not to put her friend through more suffering, and we’ll accompany Fish on the final journey later today.

Of course we’ll all miss the extra-toed radio-active cat, but my love loses a special friend today, and for that my heart breaks.

Godspeed Fish, and thanks.

    Dearest Cathy,

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Fish’s passing. Although I never met Fish I fondly remember spending many hours photoshopping HP bottles into his pictures.
The picture above reminds me so much of our own silver tabby, Bella. Bella was brought into our house against my better judgment, but we are now very close and spend many quiet hours together. I can only imagine how much you must be missing your cat… named Fish.

    Thinking of you, – Bruce

    Hi Cat and Bob
I’m sorry to hear that, although we know we’ll outlive them it’s sad to see a longtime pet become sick and pass away and I imagine even harder to bring them to the vet yourself.

“So long and thanks for all the fish”

    Hi Cat and Bob,

Sorry to hear of the news, it’s not a decision I’ve ever had to make and I don’t know how I’d go making it. With three cats now (one I brought back from Solomon Islands- where I sent you a postcard from! … even with all the quarantine etc.. I couldn’t leave her behind there – she wouldn’t have lasted and having seen the local cats I couldn’t do that to her) I may one day have to make a decision like you have.

My thoughts are with you and I hope out of everything you look back on the love and friendship that Fish gave over all the years and remember all the happiness you got as a result.

    Take care
